Lilacs. The fresh scent of newly blossomed lilacs, wet with morning dew inspires me. It takes me back to my Nana's yard where imagination was our playstation and we utilized the few resources we had as “low-income” kids... we found ways to have fun...we made runways with bed sheets.... did one another's hair and make up... snuck jewelry from Nana's bedroom and we ripped that runway like we were America's first top models. We made back drops and props and we wrote our own skits and performed them for family....we defined creativity.

Sunset. The way the sun can reflect off the clouds and the very same sky that was a beautiful azure hours before is transformed into an artist's palette... hues of pink and lavender …. burnt orange and radiant gold …. My Nana use to always say: “Red skies at night, sailor's delight... red skies in the morning, sailors warning.” The sky inspires me to write so often, but the sunset is the precursor to my true love.

My muse. The moon.

Homeless. The homeless inspire me. They inspire me to push harder and do better, because I was one of “them”. I have called a shelter “home”... I have called a motel room “home”... and now that I have a HOME... I am inspired to one day be able to not only tend to the needs of my own family... but have a bit of excess that I might make a difference in someone else's life... the way people made a difference in mine. The other day my husband and I came to an intersection. Sitting at the stop light, up ahead we saw a haggard looking old man... his eyes looked so very sad and tired... his leathery skin looked as though he was in desperate need of a bath. He's what we call a “panhandler”... the unwanted... the undesirable. Then we read his sign.... it said: “Will work any job for minimum wage.” There was no request for money. He just wanted a job. I want to tell his story. I want to tell the story of the people who 95% of would refuse to look at.... let alone smile or open our arms to offer a hug. I want to tell their stories.

Life. Life inspires me. The media wants us all to think there's no good left. I want to find the good... and paint pictures of it with my words. I want to be a beacon of light. Words. Words inspire me to shine..

I must say it is my mom who inspires me. She was a single mom from Mt. Pleasant, La. She completed her education at Grambling College despite her father telling her not to, but to get married instead.

She moved to Chicago and became a teacher.  I've seen her go the extra distance to reach troubled youth and make a difference in their lives.

I now continue this reach with my urban farming project. Utilizing two examples she showed me. We always had gardens and fresh vegetables and there were always students at our house that needed extra attention and love.Marguerite H. Rigsby inspired me to make a difference in a child's life and to grow things flowers and vegetables.

What inspires me most is a combination of music, my personal
experiences as well as reading the writing of others.

Creatively, I strive for growth. One artist in particular that has
inspired me over the years is Author Walter Mosley, Donald Goines,
Sidney Sheldon and John Grisham. I have always been a huge fan of
crime fiction, the plot twist, the intrigue and just those stories
that leave you on the edge of your seats.

As far as poetry goes, I would have to say Lord Byron, Pablo Neruda as
well as C.S. Lewis. Poetry depending on the artist brings a unique
blend of expression; painting a portrait with words, engaging the mind
while provoking thought to those many questions that cross the mind.
Poetry allows me to free my soul from the constraints and restrictions
that could otherwise censor the integrity of expression in it's purest
form.

Another thing I draw inspiration from is traveling. The change of
scenary takes my creative spirit to a different realm. It's like
viewing live in a different blend of colors. Whether it's the layering
of clouds, the purity of blue in the skies, the stars scattered thru
the nights, the setting of the sun (especially on the West Coast) as
well as the sounds of people and traffic.

As a writer, to be inspired pushes the mind and the pen to new levels
never before discovered. It's a rebirthing, a renewal, allowing me to
creatively spread my wings and soar.
